Karma

Introduction

Karma is the fundamental cosmic law of cause and effect that governs the evolution of the living being. It is the mechanism through which every action, thought, and intention produces a corresponding consequence that must be experienced. In the Martinus cosmology, karma is not a system of divine punishment or reward, but a natural, inevitable process of learning and cosmic balance.

The Law of Cause and Effect

The essence of karma lies in the principle that every being is the "master of its own fate." Every deed, word, and thought creates a pattern in the cosmic whole, and the being must eventually face the results of its own actions.

• **No Escape from Consequences:** A being cannot escape the effects of its actions; the consequences are an inseparable part of the act itself.
• **The Mirror of Judgment:** A profound aspect of karma is that one's judgment of others reflects one's own inner state. To criticize, judge, or feel malice toward others is to invite a corresponding karmic "retribution" upon oneself. As the principle states: "One is what one judges others to be."
• **Personal Responsibility:** Since every being is the original cause of its own experiences, it is entirely responsible for the quality of its past and future.

Karma and Evolution

Karma serves as the primary engine for the development of consciousness. Through the continuous cycle of action and experience, the living being undergoes a transformative process.

• **The Role of Suffering and Hardship:** While often viewed with dread, the "dark karma" of suffering, sickness, and adversity provides the necessary friction for growth. These experiences are the "teachers" that prompt the being to reflect, learn, and eventually seek higher, more harmonious ways of existence.
• **From Self-Interest to Altruism:** As a being works through its instinctive and selfish karma, it gradually develops the capacity for "altruistic love" (*næstekærlighed*). This transition from a purely self-centered existence to one that seeks the well-being of all life is a milestone in cosmic evolution.
• **The Development of Intuition:** As the being learns to navigate the consequences of its actions, it develops its intuition—the ability to sense the eternal laws of the universe and align its will with the divine order.

The Mechanism of the Spiral Cycle

The resolution of karma unfolds across the vast expanse of the spiral cycle and multiple incarnations.

• **The Spiral Year:** The "repayment" of karmic debts is not a single event but a continuous process occurring through the different "seasons" of the spiral. The lessons learned in one cycle are carried forward as "talent kernels" into the next.
• **The Spiritual Realms:** Following the physical death, the being enters spiritual realms where it continues to experience the mental and psychic weight of its earthly life. This period can involve a process of "purgation" where the being confronts its past actions until the karma is resolved and the path to higher consciousness is cleared.
